Spotlight: Alex Contreras

LSP Member Spotlight - 2014.06.30

Alex (Alejandro) Contreras has 15 years experience as a filmmaker as well as working as a Marketing and System Analyst at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics. As a co-founder ofLiving Storm Productions, Alex’s intertwining of story and music are expressed in the company’s history and culture.

Values of fairness and respect were woven into stories told by Alex’s grandparents, who introduced him to storytelling. The images and characterizations were thought provoking and a way for Alex to learn about the culture of ancient Mexico and the indigenous worldview of the Mexika (me-shee-ka/Aztecs). For him it was a way to reconnect to a wonderfully rich legacy of beauty and art. But, also as a way to understand the philosophy of long ago actions that were used as a foundation to his upbringing.

As a graduate of University of Wisconsin-Madison’s School of Business, Alex had the knowledge and experience to pull together resources to write and produce, most notably a feature film, wherein that opportunity allowed him to continue the traditions that he grew up with, and then he passed on the torch to other writers. Now he primarily is the Producer of Living Storm’s ongoing and future endeavors.

Alex doesn’t set out determined to produce art about any given subject. Each project consists of multiple steps and processes, in a range of different media, grouped around specific themes and meanings. During research and pre-production, new areas of interest arise and lead to the next body of work. He supports his team’s creativity and by sometimes popular demand will champion new threads that lead to new inspirations (i.e. authors/writers).
